The floodgates
of BJJ are opening in the UK, as more and more world class black belts are arriving
on a regular basis; helping to spread the word is Gordinho who made his second
trip over with Ben Poppleton earlier in February this year. Heading back over
to GB Doncaster I attended the Sunday seminar and was welcomed by a wide Brazilian
smile and firm bear hug by the man himself. The seminar progressed from the work
done on the previous seminar by moving to attacks from the half guard, with Gordinho
demonstrating about a dozen attacks from this position, before moving on to endless
rounds of passing the half guard, whilst the other man attempts to pull guard
or sweep.
I managed
to make it to Chris Browns academy the following Friday for more of the
same and took over a few of my students to meet Gordinho and see what all the
fuss was all about and Gordinho didnt fail to please, taking a laid back
but technically crammed half guard seminar, with all the trimmings.

These techniques
and attacks do work in sparring and when I now find myself in the half guard I
feel at an advantage over my opponent, as opposed to a disadvantage. Full credits
to Ben Poppleton in bringing over Gordinho and congrats go out to newly minted
purple belts Charlie Martin, Neil Owen and Neil White and new blues Darren Dixon,
Paul Chapman, Laura Mc Bride, Nigel Clarke, Lawrence Pritchard and Andrew Miller,
all approved of by Carlos Gracie Jr.
Gordinho
is due back in a few months time, so keep your eyes peeled and until then, see
you on the mats!
