Gracie
Jiu Jitsu arrives in the North West
The
UK is witnessing a BJJ explosion, as the gospel according to Carlos Gracie Jr
continues to spread across the UK; recent converts to the Brazilian way include
Marc Walder, who recently gained his brown belt and Andy Roberts who opened the
doors to students in Sheffield.
The
latest club to open its doors is Gracie Barra Manchester: after many months of
searching for locations and encountering knock backs from health clubs and council
run leisure centres, Carl Fisher has secured a weekly spot at the Bolton Olympic
Wrestling Club, Wigan Road, Bolton. The club boasts an impressive permanent mat,
which can accommodate thirty grapplers with ease, as well as showers, saunas and
weights room. At the opening night on 4th February, the session attracted
a wide cross section of martial artists, mixing Thai boxers with Traditional jiu
jitsu men and freestyle wrestlers with judokas.
Instruction
is in the hands of blue belt Carl Fisher, who will be delving into many years
of worldwide travel and training, as well as competition experience and will be
whipping a competition team into immediate effect. Owing to business commitments,
purple belt Dan Elmer will be calling in on the club when time allows to train,
as well as keeping all the students on their toes.
Add
to the equation regular visits from black belts Braulio Estima, Roger Gracie,
Pablo Silva and Mauricao Gomes as well as top flight teachers from the Fighting
Photographers contacts book, the North West now has the BJJ club it deserves.
Gracie Barra Manchester
has arrived!
Classes
are held every Wednesday 7-9pm, 4 pounds sterling. Sunday classes commence 29th
February at the club 11-1pm, all styles and associations welcome.
Braulio
Estima will be at the club for a three-hour seminar Sunday March 14th,
a mix of gi and no gi. Twenty pounds secures a place, more details to follow.
