SFUKA 4 September 2000 Iron Man UK = Amazing event Congratulations to Andy Jardine, Jo, his staff and judges for a great event yesterday. The quality was incredible? Have that many great submission wrestlers ever gathered under one roof in the UK before? No-one seemed to think so! The large numbers of grapplers from other countries made this a true international event. Wrestlers came from France, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Brazil. SFUK staff members will be posting their accounts of the day soon. Highlights included: Panos Theodoridis - Alliance Sweden, world class lightweight wrestler wins the -71 with a fantastic display of throws. There's almost a riot too when his match with SSJ's Danny Batten gets a bit passionate! Leigh Remedios returns in great form grappling out of his skin for a silver medal. Very impressive. Kamal Locke fighting the giant from Sweden, Adrian Alionte, then beating the superb Keith Dace to win the +91 division. Speaking to Kamal Afterwards he said, the event was harder than Vale Tudo. Adrian Alionte's 'Grand Slam' - he picks his opponent up, holds him for about 20 seconds and bam ! Awesome. The Swedish Alliance Team came and conquered. Rikard Anderson - RA BJJ Sweden, great grappler, smooth and tight. Wins the -91, beating the great James Zikic in the process. Edmilson Alves, BJJ 5th graded black belt with the most amazing submission of the day. A double footlock that you need to see a pic to believe it! He lost a contraversal decision to Alex Reid in a semifinal. The London Shootfighters, Kamal Locke, James Zikic, Rob Sulski and James Evans (did I get that surname right?) going after submission after submission, superb cameraderie. The guys from Shooters - extremely strong, professional and tough. Hugely impressive. Pancrase France team - great striking! Including a KO by mistake! British grapplers! Great performances by Danny Batten, Keith Dace, The Ashford Vale Tudo Team, Alex Reid, Gaz Roriston, London Shootfighters, etc! Guy Nievens from ADCC watching the event - good to meet you sir! Any chance of getting some of these grapplers in at ADCC? This could go on all day.....check out the SFUK Forum for the latest! SFUK 3 September 2000

The Event - I go to just about every event there is and the is my favourite so far. Well run, great atmosphere and one of the best selections of fighters ever seen together in this country. Jardine - VERY accommodating (let me in for free and sit right next to the action!) and dealt with any problems swiftly, great job. Rules - The points system forced people to go for takedowns and to get a mount which moved the action along but I wasn't that keen on the kicks 'cause it made some people wary about shooting (there some cracking leg kicks though that could be heard all round the building lol). Judging - The referring by Fred Rado was excellent and the judging on the whole was very good, there were only a couple of decisions I disagreed with (one of which was Alex Reid's 'defeat' of the bjj 5th dan). Crowd - he place was pretty much full but there wasn't much seating space, it should have been swamped. Great atmosphere and it was nice to hook up with Dom, James, Jony, THC and the rest of the fighters and forum members (and Rick Young too!). Fighters - Brazilians, Greeks, Fins, Swedes, Scots, London Shootfighters, Gracie Barra and more were all there - Christian Sanberg from Sweden - sfuking excellent despite the luminous Speedos. Two Shooters from Finland - Great skill and sportsmanship, exactly what a fighter should be. Swedish Alliance Team - All very good fighters but rather rowdy, they got so many warnings it was ridiculous. The two brothers from Greece were mad, both trying suplexs at every opportunity, one won best throw of the day (I think it was for the time he suplexed a guy he was holding in a headlock, ouch). Danny Brennan - Nailed a sweet flying armbar against Tahir Rashid. Allionte - Biggest guy I've ever seen. He picked a guy up on his shoulder, held him there and asked if it was ok to slam him, then walked forward and drilled him in to the mat with all his 160kg of weight on top. Kamal - What can I say? The Champ. Superb performance. There was so much more but I don't want to make you all jealous, a great day. Much repect to everyone involved. Levo It was a great (long) day. The venue was excellent and Andy and Jo had everything running as smoothly as possible for such a large event. Andy was always on hand to resolve disputes an explain the judges rulings to those who felt aggrieved. As was Fred Rado who did an excellent job as referee, remaining thoroughly beyond reproach as arbiter and controlling the fights well. The standard of competition was very high although it was a shame some of the alliance guys felt the need to throw a paddy over the rules as I would have liked to see them in action. Still... Plenty of talent and lots of heart was displayed by those taking part. There was some great technical play and contoversy abound. One decision being reversed when the judges realised they'd scored a match incorrectly. The scuffle that developed when Danny Batten was suplexed when both fighters were clearly out of the fighting area was spirited, and deservedly so, but nothing came of it and it was resolved amicably. Moise Ripo's disqualification was the clearest cut decision of the day. He opened with two heavy kicks to the body, which had Oliver Ellis on the back foot, and then followed up with an open handed hook to the face which dropped Ellis. Ripo was immediately contrite when he realised what he'd done but it was too late. I don't know if Ellis was actually KO'd but he was carried from the arena on a stretcher, evidently against his will. he looked like he just wanted to get up but the medical staff took all the necessary precautions and rightly so. Hope you are ok Oliver. Alex Reed's decision over Edmilson Alvez was bizarre INMHO as Alvez looked to have taken him down at least twice within the fighting area (he took him down about six times in total but some of these were out of bounds and didn't count), thus scoring points whereas Reed landed only kicks on the Brazillian. At the rules meeting it had been stated that no points would be given for kicks unless they dropped the opponent. I had the score at least 10-0 in favour of Alvez but there you go. The fight was great to watch with Reed pounding away at the bjj master's legs and body as Alvez desperately tried to close. Both fighters had their hands held out and definitely made contact to the face on repeated occasions, Alvez appearing to take a dive IMO as Reed frustrated yet another take down attempt. Can't wait for the next one and hope more of you guys can make it as if you missed this one, you missed out. Dom B Iron Man UK Videos Iron Man Videos available £20 each + p&p.
