A New Format

RING of TRUTH 2 saw the introduction of a new fight format by Lee Hasdell's Combined Budo Association. A true mixed martial art event containing Ring Ju Jitsu, New Karate (similar to San Shou), Rings KOK rules & Pure Shoot (Vale Tudo). This was done for several reasons. Firstly to educate the public - by watching Ring JJ & New Karate, they can see how these arts are elements of Pure Shoot . A canny idea by Lee H, he pointed out that if they saw how Pure Shoot was just JJ and Karate mixed then if they trashed MMA they would have to trash all other MA's too. Also by bring in these different elements the event will appeal to a broader group of martial artists and hopefully get them into MMA!

Fight by Fight Report

This is a quick report, we shall hopefully be added more detail from Digby and check out the SFUK Forum for members opinions of the event.

Ring Ju Jitsu 2 x 5 mins

Danny Batten v Matt Bowen

This is a new event for most of us. It's basically BJJ in a ring, win is by submission or throwing in the towel. In theory this was probably the least exciting of the fight formats at ROT. Far from it. Batten & Bowen treated the crowd to a superb display of submissions and escapes. Matt Bowen is a well known, experienced grappler and managed to escape and counter the attacking Danny Batten. The match looked very even and was going to a draw when Batten finally got the armbar he was looking for with 30 seconds left on the clock! Danny hasn't been grappling long and from what we've seen he's a star in the making.

Rob Sulski v Chris Watts

I spoke to Rob backstage with the Paul and Alexis his instructors at London Shootfighters.

SFUK : Hi Rob, what's this? I've never seen any of the London Shootfighters in a gi!

Rob : Ha ha I know. I prefer no gi, but they asked me to do this so....

SFUK : Are you from a gi background then, judoka or something?

Rob : No, not at all, I've only been practising with a gi for 2 weeks. I've been rolling with a BJJ Brown Belt at London bridge.

Paul : Anyway we're treating this just as a submissions event, Rob'll go for subs and that's it.

And that was it. Rob Sulski didn't take long to crank a heel hook on MMA veteran Chris Watts for a swift victory.

New Karate 3 x 2 mins

Martin Carter v Pete Coop

Didn't catch much of this fight - that's because it only lasted 8.7 seconds! Carter KO's Coop for the fastest stoppage in TFF History. Lee told us that Carter is a Karate instructor and he believes in 'one technique'. Pretty effective it is too.

Lee Macguiness v Andy Badcock

You've got to admire Big Mac, a true warrior who's not afraid to charge the cannons at every event. Mac got stronger and more confident with each round. By the third he was trying spinning backfists (and connecting), axe kicks and unleashing a barrage of Tim Witherspoon stylee overhand rights. Badcock (good name!), gave as good as he got but Macguiness was too strong on the night. Mac by judges decision. Great match.

RINGS K.O.K 2 x 5 mins

Paul Ramsdale v John Williamson

Williamson almost managed to snag Ramsdale in an armbar early on in the round, but Ramsdale managed to wriggle out of it, displaying the kind of fluidness that characterises Danny Rushton's Colosseum fighters. Ramsdale then went on the attack and caught John in a ankle lock for the tap out.

Mike Thomlinson v Johnny Burrows

A very strong looking Thomlinson took the fight to Ireland's Johnny Burrows and got a quick win by armbar. A special mention must go to the Irish Chum Sut Total Academy for making the effort to come out in a large (and vociferous!) group. Good luck to them and hope to see them here for the next one.

Pure Shoot - British Title Fight -75kg (? Beale looked heavier) 2 x5 mins

Leigh Remedios v Louis Beale

One of the most anticipated fights of the night. Leigh Remedios had challenged people to fight him on the SFUK Forum, calling out Jeremy Bailey and Leighton Hill for allegedly ducking him. With a rep of being possibly the best lightweight in Britain, many people were paying this fight extra attention.

We like Louis Beale. He's always up for it. Great sportmanship, great showmanship, you get the feeling that if you put someone twice his size in the opposite corner, Beale would still get in there with a smile on his face. He'd stepped in to replace Jeremy Bailey who had dropped out due to a wrist injury. Tonight, Louis had approx 10kgs weight advantage on Leigh.

Here's how it went. Leigh had told me backstage that he wanted to keep it standing, to show people his stand up skills, and indeed the they spent much of the time on their feet. Remedios was nimble footed and used the ring well, circling Beale who played the stalker with the evil grin LOL.

After a few punches traded, with Beale landing the heavier ones, it went to the ground. Remedios seemed more technically able, escaping Beale's guillotime attempts and getting good positions. Not that Beale seemed to care much really. He kept escaping the repeated attemps at the famous 'reclining armbar', by scooting out the back door. He didn't seem too fussed about getting hit from the mount too. Towards the end of the round Remedios kneed Beale in the face and whilst Beale protested, went for a rear naked choke. The knee was illegal as Beale had been kneeling at the time. (It would have been OK if both of them were on the same level). Remedios warned.

Round two. Beale was getting stronger. Landing a heavy punch, then for some reason standing back and grinning. Showboating ! This seemed to bother Leigh, who was beginning to look strangely out of sorts and not the fighter we had seen at Andy Jardine's and the KSBO. Again Remedios took the attack to Beale, trying double legs and the armbar. Again Beale seemed impervious, despite a cut above the left eye (from the knee?). Each time Louis sprawled more energy was visibly drained from Leigh. Finally at the end of the 2nd round Remedios got the armbar he'd been chasing all night. Beale tapped. Leigh collapsed exhausted on the ring floor. Beale looked like he'd just got warmed up.

Leigh Remedios wins the British Pure Shoot Title.

Louis Beale hoisted Leigh up in the air in a gesture of great sportsmanship. A disappointing display by Leigh Remedios, who was clearly gutted about it, despite his win. He apologised and explained to the crowd that he was weak from cutting weight when he expected to fight Jeremy Bailey. If you want it from the horse's mouth, check out the SFUK Forum, where Leigh posts regularly.

Ring of Truth Vale Tudo Tournament

Kamal Locke v Thomas Lamont

Kamal Locke from London Shootfighters dominated Ireland's Thomas Lamont. Lamont has improved a lot from his last visit to the ring at Milton Keynes, when he was dispatched quickly by Dexter Casey. They both exchanged heavy leg kicks, the kind that would cripple a donkey, but both these guys are giants and seemed unphased by them. Kamal seemed comfortable throughout and when they hit the ground got Lamonts back and won it with a rear naked choke. Kamal looks like a top heavyweight alright.

Lee Murray v Danny Rushton

This was the biggie. Early favourite Danny Rushton against the aggressive Lee Murray. Both have had recent experience aboard. This looked on paper to be the toughest fight of the night.

Danny wasn't going to trade punches with Lee and went for a swift double leg. He got it, and after escaping the half guard, sat in the mount tried to get an keylock. Lee turned in to escape. They scramble up. Rushton shoots another double leg and gets the mount and starts punching, dominating the fight early. Murray covers well and despite his position doesn't get hit much at all. Danny goes for the katagame choke, leaning forward, trying to sink Lee's own arm around his neck. He can't get it sunk in.

Rushton still dominates the ground and this time landing heavy punches from the guard. Murray responds with bicycle kicks. Rushton rolls back and goes for an ankle lock, looking for the heel hook. Murray strikes him and looks for a heel hook himself. Rushton goes for the knee bar, Murray escapes, leaving Danny on the floor in open guard trying to kick Lee away. Murray wants to go back to standup, but hovers over Danny, trying to find the opening for a big punch. They get stood up by Phil Norman.

Rushton looks tired whilst Murray looks fresh.Rushton goes for the single leg. Murray sprawls. Rushton gets side control. Rushton moves to knee on stomach and gets past Lee's elavators to get the mount. Lee trys to buck him off, but Danny's having none of it, and starts punching. This time weakly, he's tired. Rushton works the armbar and gets a tight one! Murray refuses to tap and starts kicking Danny in the head.

Ref stops the fight and Lee is warned for an illegal move (one that cause some debate afterwards).

Danny is taken to his corner, where he collapses exhausted and needs medical attention. Eventually this fight is called a No Contest. We'll be talking to Lee hasdell soon, for a full explanation. A pity it ended this way as it was fantastic until this point. Murray was very impressive. Very calm. We hope Danny is OK. We want a re-match please!

Kamal Locke withdrawls due to knee injury, leaving no-one for the final of ROT2.
