SAN GOKUI SUBMISSION GRAPPLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 9TH SEPTEMBER 2001 Lightweight division
Champion - Craig Myerscough 2nd Mark Chen 3rd Ryan Hunter 3rd Jimmy Wong With the current champion unable to defend his title this time this division was up for grabs. All the fighters showed they were really up for this with some fantastic performances. The Keysi / Machado Academy from Hull had a strong showing with first time competitor Jimmy Wong flowing beautifully from take down to mount to arm bar finish in what could easily have been the technique of the day and progressed to the semi-finals. Keysi / Machado student Mark Chen narrowly beat Hull Sport Ju Jitsu fighter Graham Beaumont to move into the final. Pontefract MMA fighter Ryan Hunter submitted all his opponents getting to the semi-finals then wrestler Craig Myerscough powered his way to the semis too. In the semis Mark Chen outpointed Ryan Hunter and Craig Myerscough outpointed Jimmy Wong in 2 very close matches. Martin Bax from Shamrock Fighting System fought very well before having to withdraw through injury. In the final Craig Myerscough managed to outpoint Mark Chen to become the Lightweight Champion In a weight group that had 21 competitors and produced some fantastic performances, due to his superb, consistent performance Craig Myerscough was awarded fighter of the day. Light middleweight division Champion - Glenn Brodrick 2nd Greg Mawson 3rd Carl Fisher 3rd Tony Devine This weight division turned out some excellent matches and would include 3 previous winners of this title. To be honest 10 of the 16 competitors could realistically have won it. Highlights of the first round included reigning champion Tony Devine versus Vale Tudo fighter Andy" the Force from the North" Cooper looking for some extra groundwork in preparation for his bout in Millennium Brawl 4. Tony getting the ref's decision by takedowns. ADCC correspondent Carl Fisher going through regulation time and 2 periods of overtime before finally out pointing Andy Smith from the Kicker's Academy. Last years champion Ian Bromley getting the decision over Gracie Barra fighter Ian Strathmore. Shamrock's Dean Hennessey arm locked Gracie Barra's Barry Foley who looked absolutely disgusted with himself for getting caught. The second round featured another classic encounter between Tony Devine and Ian Bromley, two very good competitors. They patiently stalked each other looking for openings with both guys putting in full-blooded attacks but both guys defended brilliantly. Tony then caught Ian with a modified harai goshi right at the end of the match giving Ian no time to respond sending Tony into the semi-finals. With Carl Fisher in the semis also, were two relatively inexperienced competitors who were about to cause an upset. Greg Mawson form Skirmish out pointed Carl Fisher to earn a place in the final meeting Gracie Barra's Glenn Brodrick after a stunning decision over the reigning champion. Using a perfect strategy of going with the throw, every time Tony threw Glenn, Glenn took his back on the way over ending with a rear mount with hooks where he was able to attack. The pattern of the fight remained until the end of regulation time and overtime with Glenn being getting the decision. Glenn then met Greg Mawson in the final which was a close match but Glenn did enough to be crowned the new champion and becoming a marked man for next time in a very tough weight group. On a final note, either of these guys could have also taken fighter of the day. Middleweight division Champion - Ande Roberts 2nd Dan Spink 3rd Andy Pyle 3rd Adam Reeds Highlights of the first round of the middleweight division included reigning champion Andy Pyle getting a submission by Kimura arm lock on Royce Gracie blue belt Ross Pettifer and a strategic battle between Gracie Barra blue belt Ande Roberts and Mark 'Spenna' Spencer. The fight of this division was the battle between Andy Pyle and Ande Roberts. Both guys exchanged arm lock attempts and positional control with Ande Roberts just coming out on top to meet Dan Spink, who in his first competition found himself in the finals. Ande Roberts proved a little too experienced and took the title. Some great performances by some relative new comers to competition. Light heavyweight division Champion - Nick Jones 2nd Steven Cummings 3rd Michael Butler 3rd Paul Hannan Reigning champion Nick Jones from Skirmish started his quest to retain his title by taking on Michael Butler from Mike Wrays Keysi Academy in Newcastle. Nick had the advantage although Michael put on a great performance in his first competition but Nick got the decision in the end. Second semi final saw Steven Cummings against Paul Hannan in another tough match which Steven eventually won. The final saw Nick Jones attempting his signature more, the rolling knee bar, putting pressure on Steven which he defended well but after a long hard match Nick retained his title.
Heavyweight division Champion - Keith Dace 2nd Paul Scott 3rd Brian Aiken 3rd Wayne Wood In the semi finals Keith Dace managed to go through against Brian Aiken whilst Paul Scott got by Wayne Wood. The final was a veritable Clash of the Titans. Keith managed to pick up and dump his opponent on a couple of occasions and maintained pressure on Paul from a top position. Keith got the judges decision after the 5 minute final. I cant emphasise enough how BIG these guys are but can they move! . Senior Male division Champion - Pete Guest 2nd Brian Smart 3rd Ian Patterson 3rd Ron Carr Pete Guest started well using his patented arm bar from guard to good effect against Ron Carr, taking the match putting him through to the final. In the other semi Brian Smart submitted his opponent to advance to the finals. In the final both guys settled into their chosen game, Pete working from bottom, Brian working from top in their preferred positions. The match was very close but Pete got the decision. Female division Champion - Rachael Wheatley 2nd Bev Sisson 3rd Vikki Watts In a very technical match, both ladies attacked and defended well in a close match, as time went on Rachael used guard well and caught Vikki with a straight arm bar to put her through to the final. In the second match Bev Sisson used her size and strength to good advantage to secure her passage into the final. In the final Rachael settled into guard not allowing Bev to use her size difference, again attacking from guard Rachael applied an arm bar that Bev tried to roll form but Rachael rolled with her and intensified the lock causing Bev to tap out making Rachael the ladies champion. The previous ladies champion was unable to compete this time that will hopefully set up an interesting match at the next comp. Intermediate Male division Champion - Paul Cole 2nd Jonathan Booth 3rd Gary Carr 3rd Marc Leigh
The semi final matches started with Paul Cole submitting his opponent as did Jonathan Booth in the other semi. In the final Paul Cole of Gracie Barra gave away a considerable height advantage to Jonathan Booth of Pontefract MMA. Jony used his height well to catch Paul in 2 guillotines which were stopped by the referee as he deemed them to be cranking the neck instead of choking. On the third guillotine attempt Paul picked Jony up and took him down giving him the advantage. After a period of give and take, Paul Cole got the judges decision and was obviously delighted as he ran across the mat to his senior team mates. (oh, to be young again).
