San Gokui Organisation Inter Club Competition 09/12/01

Report by Darren Currie.

The day got started with the Junior Grappling matches, as always with the kids there was the energy and enthusiasm to get stuck in and have a go. All the kids behaved and performed brilliantly, in particular the girls from Hull Sport Jiu Jitsu Club, Karis Leathley, Roxanne Peacock and Melissa Leathley who did extremely well.

Whilst on the other mat there were a few grappling matches for the seniors as a warm up for the Vale Tudo to follow. First on was Hull Sport Jiu Jitsu’s Troy Rimmington winning convincingly with a cross lapel choke followed by brother Paul winning on referee’s decision. Making it 3 out of 3 for Hull Sport Jiu Jitsu Graham Beaumont also won by referee’s decision. Royce blue belt Andy Roberts drew with Ryan Hunter in a pure BJJ match, Royce blue belt Ross ‘Baby Huey’ Pettifer won by arm bar and Carl Fisher won by referee’s decision. To finish things off, Pete Guest did a spot of iron man training taking 3 matches one after the other.

Next up was the CHAOS title fight. CHAOS is our version of Vale Tudo for kids. Jonathan Smith took on Tom Richardson, both showing punching to clinching to grappling skills. At the end of the match the judges’ decision went to Jonathan.

Then came the eagerly awaited Vale Tudo tournaments.

In the Lightweight tournament (70 kg and under) Paul Tighe from Mike Wray’s Keysi Academy in Newcastle, scored the first win going on to meet Pontefract MMA’s Ryan Hunter in the quarter finals, which Ryan then won. Also in the quarters Ross Bainbridge outpointed Steve Crozier, Mark Chen decisioned Thai boxer Peter Tiarks and Andrew Roberts decisioned Graham Beaumont.

Ryan Hunter was due to fight Ross Bainbridge in the semis but both guys had to withdraw due to hand injuries leaving the way for Keysi/MJJ Mark Chen to meet GJJ Andrew Roberts in the final. Both guys fought very well with Mark Chen getting the decision and earning himself a title shot in the process.

In the Light middleweight tournament (71 kg to 78kg) Rory Duffield has a little too much power for Roger Johnsen going through to the semis to meet Carl Fisher. Due to injury Carl withdrew at the 2 _ minute mark sending Rory through to the finals. In the other semi final Keysi, Newcastle’s Iain Brownley fought Chris Kerr through regulation time and through an overtime. Brownley got the nod after the closest match of the day.

The final was set for Rory Duffield — Iain Brownley final but injury struck again leaving Iain no option but to withdraw. Rory is a relentless, powerful fighter who deserved to win overall. As there was no-one left to fight him in the final Chris Kerr volunteered to take Rory on at submission wrestling so he got his money’s worth, which ended a draw.

Brian Smart (top) & Ross Pettifer

The Middleweight tournament (79 kg to 86kg) featured the youngest fighter in the tournament, 16 year old Ross Pettifer, who immediately made his presence felt by taking Gary Henderson’s back and putting on a rear naked to book his place in the semis. He then fought Michael Butler whom he submitted with a straight arm lock to advance to the finals.

In the other semi Brian Smart submitted Mark Bailey with a telephone lock and went to meet Ross in the finals.

The fight went through regulation time and into overtime, with only 30 seconds left Ross took Brian’s back and sunk in a choke to win the tournament. Every match in this weight group was won by submission.

The Ladies match looked to be a non starter as only one fighter, Cheryl Williams, turned up. Pete Hill from Pontefract MMA offered to fight despite being only 15. Both fighters and coaches agreed and the match was started. Pete threw some heavy shots standing so Cheryl took him down where she quickly applied a straight arm lock. Both fighters got plenty of applause from the crowd.

Finally the Heavyweight Title Match was going to be contested. Champion Chris Collins fought Chris Eastwood in a rematch that previously ended in a draw. Quite ironic that both guys have lost significant weight since then so they hardly looked like heavyweights. Collins started well striking, Eastwood went to the clinch where Collins pulled out a guillotine to end the match and successfully defend his title.
