After
another intense afternoon session at London
Shootfighters, we managed to grab a few minutes with rising MMA star
Kamal Locke.
SFUK: Hi Kamal, you said there were a few things you wanted putting straight.....? Kamal : Ah yeah, well I think I was over reacting a bit, but I tell you what, I heard someone was saying bad things about my performance at the Pancrase. It just so happens, this someone said it at my own school, so I had to just come up and school the person basically. SFUK: You're not gonna tell us who? KL: No lol. SFUK: You did say you were having an off day at the Pancrase. KL: Yeah, well I dominated my fights, but I didn't do as well as I know I could. It was a bad day at the office kind of thing. SFUK: What have you got coming up? KL: I've got Lee Johnstone's show lined up (MMAUK), and I want to do the Iron Man this year. And of course there's the Millenium Brawl 2 in October, fighting Travis Fulton. Those are lined up. I may take some other ones on the way depending on my time. SFUK: How do you fancy your chances agaonst Travis? KL: Against Travis? I'm gonna eat him up man. SFUK: Who else is on that card? KL: I think my brother James (Zikic) is supposed to be fighting Jeremy Horn. Nothings confirmed but that would be good. SFUK: So how many days do you train? KL: 6 days a week. SFUK: Aren't you knackered LOL! KL: I'm extremely tired at the moment coz I've been training non stop for competition, the kind of training that competition demands for about 2 years now. I'm well overdue a rest. I could do ith a month off. I'm trying to schedule it into my program, come back renewed and fighting fit for my obligations this year! SFUK: You also fight San Da yeah? KL: Thats my background. I come from chinese martial arts, I started off competing in San Shou or San Da. Barbara Antonioni is getting professional San Da together in this country and actually it sound very exciting. Really, really good for chinese martial arts or chinese kickboxing. I was really interested in fighting in that, but as the MMAUK show has been postponed I have decided to drop out of San Da and put my priorities into the mixed martail arts. SFUK: You were due to fight Mark Walker (at the MMAUK), do you know much about him? KL: Thats right. Just what people have told me. He comes from a boxing background, he trains with Geoff Oughton so I should imagine he knows grappling. ..and he's a big lad so I hear LOL SFUK: Heheh, yeah he's massive! He's got foreams the size of legs! Alexis (London Shootfighter Instructor): Bodybuilding big? SFUK : Yeh massive, like brick sh*thouse massive. Alexis : It doesn't matter, Kamal's got far too much stamina KL: Stamina and speed as well. I'm fast on the ground and I'm fast on my feet. So whatever, I'll mix it up, whatever. SFUK: Cool. What are your fighting ambitions then? KL: To be honest, I just wanted to have a go. I absolutely love the grappling based martial arts. Absolutely love them. I think I'm in the best place for training. I've got the best trainers, Alexis and Paul. Best training partners. So really I want to have a go and see where it goes from there. SFUK: Thanks a lot Kamal KL: Thank you.
