Judo Star Wayne Lakin talks to SFUKA 17 May 2000

Welcome to SFUK Wayne,

SFUKA: Could you please tell us a little about how and why you got started in Judo?

Wayne: I started in Judo when I was 8, because I was bullied at my junior school, My dad took me to see all the Martial Arts that were around at the time but i liked the look of Judo the most.

SFUKA: You have recently taken over a club in Market Bosworth, how's that going?

Wayne: Its going really well, Market Bosworth was a club tht I used to train at when I was young and Ive kept going to it over the years the old Instructor asked me to take over at the begining of the year we had only 5 regular seniors but now we have 15 - 20 on the mat,

SFUKA: Is the training at your club sport Judo only or do you grapple without gis as well?

Wayne: Training is mainly with the gi's mostly if not all Judo but I teach both. I have my own mats and teach privately Judo and grappling.

SFUKA: What does Judo have to offer a prospective student?

Wayne: I believe that Judo has loads to offer, it provides all the standing grappling moves (takedowns, throws, sweeps etc.)and it is great for submissions (strangles, armlocks, chokes) these can be done standing or on the ground. What is also very good is the Randori (free practice/ fighting) aspect so you can work and practice the moves.

SFUKA: You where in Italy recently, what was that all about?

Wayne: Yeah, I was asked to fight for a London team in Italy it was a great tournament comprising of 9, 5 man teams including 2 from Italy 1 from Japan, Switsaland, France, Germany, Belguim we took the silver medal losing to the Italian National team in the final we defeated the home team to get into the final and italy beat Japan I must say that we were very well looked after but the refereeing was a tad biased.!!

SFUKA: Any plans to fight in Mixed Martial Arts or Submission Grappling competition?

Wayne: There was last year I was not doing much Judo and a lot of training with Geoff and the lads so I was to fight Phil Norman at Milton Keynes due to diffrent reasons this never happend and to be honest i am a little busy concentrating on the Judo now I would like to get back on the British team next year.

SFUKA: Have you done much martial arts training outside of Judo?

Wayne: I wouldnt say ive done alot but I have done a few years with Geoff Thompson and I have done a little training with Peter Constindine, Dave Turton, Bob Sykes. which I enjoyed.

SFUKA: Who do you admire in the martial arts and why?

Wayne: I admire so many people for diffrent reasons: My coach Neil Adams to achive 2 Olympic silvers and the first British World Champion, Greame Randall Current World Champion, me and Greame did a lot of Junior and Senior Internationals together what he has achieved is fantastic, theres Geoff Thompson and his team of lads who has supported me in the times of my life that have not gone right, theres just so many to mention.

SFUKA: What's next for Wayne Lakin?

Wayne: Next is Sardinia in three weeks im going out there with the club to do the tourniment and there is a training camp after it so that will be tough.

SFUKA: Thanks for your time.

Wayne: Thank you, Train Hard - Wayne
