UK Vale Tudo pioneer, & Superbrawl Champ James Zikic talks to SFUK 31 May 2000
James Zikic is one of Britain's best known Mixed Martial Artists, he's was one of the first to embrace MMA training in the UK. Known for his quiet demeanor and reputation for fighting anybody in the ring, we managed to squeeze some pearls of wisdom out of him, after a hectic session at London Shootfighters.
SFUK: Hi James, let's get straight to it. When's your next fight?
JZ: I should be fighting on the next Ring of Truth tournament. I'm fighting a Dutch guy called Alistair Overheem.
SFUK: How much does he weigh?
JZ: He's a big guy. 220lbs something like that.
SFUK: How do you fancy your chances then?
JZ: I believe in my technique yeah. I believe in myself and I believe in God. Ibelieve I'll be victorious at the end of the day.
SFUK: Are familiar with the guys fighting on the Ring of Truth 2 tournament and who do you think will win that round?
JZ: The fighters are Lee Murray, Geoff Oughton, Danny Rushton and Thomas Lamont. And I believe that Danny Rushton will be victorious.
SFUK: Which will set you up with a rematch with Danny, what do you think about that?
JZ: That'll be correct yeah, I believe I'll do the same job that I did last time. I don't know if he's improved much but I believe I'm gonna win again.
SFUK: You have the reputation of fighting all the time. Basically, anyone, anytime. What makes you do that ? I mean what drives you as a fighter?
JZ: At this stage in my career, I'm trying to gain as much experience as possible, trying to build up a foundation. But in the next couple of years I'm gonna be much more selective about where I fight. You know, fight for like bigger purses and not just fight anywhere.
SFUK: What your ambition in MMA?
JZ: My ambition is to go to the UFC in America and become the middleweight champion.
SFUK: You could kick some American arse LOL!
JZ: You have to aim for the stars, do you know what I mean.Aim for the roof otherwise you won't get off the carpet. You have to aim high.
SFUK:You box a lot don't you, does that mean you have to keep your weight down?
JZ: Yeah I do. Amateur. That's why I can't bulk up for the heavier guys, I've got to keep down. I box at 190lbs.
Alexis ( instructor London Shootfighters chips in ) - I say we have have to beef Jamie up 10 kilos! If he wants to fight in the UFC he has to up his weight. He'll be meeting guys that have dropped weight from heavyweight down to middleweight. He's a very very light middleweight. At the moments he's doing a very good job, fighting tough guys but giving up a lot of weight. We want to keep his technique but up his strength and weight. I think he'll be an awesome fighter.
SFUK: In the future will you be taking more fights with heavier opponents to get used to someone bigger and stronger?
JZ: Well at this stage in this country and the rest of europe there's nobody ...well they may be big but they don't worry me in terms of technique because there's no-one really brilliant. Obviously internationally I wouldn't want to fight at heavyweight because there's a lot of really good guys out there. Really big and I could get hurt. I'd rather fight a middleweight.
SFUK: You were due to fight Geoff Oughton in the MMAUK, do you know much about him?
JZ: Well I've actually grappled with him before at Lee Hasdell's Total Grappling Challenge. I beat him on points so I'm not worried about him.
SFUK: Thanks a lot James, good luck with your future events.
JZ: You're welcome. Cheers.
