Grapplers Down Under - interview with Anthony Perosh

Carl Fisher : What are your thoughts about your performance here?

Anthony Perosh : I knew what I had to do, as he was bigger than me so I was going to pull him straight into guard and play my game from there and hook and sweep and finish him from the top. I did the best I could and had him once and I didn’t capitalise on it and that’s the way it goes.

How did you get here to Abu Dhabi?

Anthony Perosh : I went through the South Pacific qualifiers, but first I had to get through the State qualifiers and the top two went to the South Pacifics and then the winner of each division got to go to Abu Dhabi.

Who do you train with?

Anthony Perosh : I am from Sydney and train BJJ for 5 and a half years now and am a purple belt. I train in Manley with Anthony Lange and in Leychardt with a number of guys and a special mention to my partner Elvis Sisonic and we have been pushing each other very hard and I would not be where I am today without him.

What do think about the shock exits of Renzo and Rigan?

Anthony Perosh : I was giving an interview before and I said watch out for the Australians and myself and look for a few surprises out there and I guess there have been a few today, blowing the whole tournament wide open and I think it’s really good for the qualifiers and next year it has to be bigger and better, not only did we qualify, but we are also doing well and will be invited back next year and the year after.

Do you know much about Chris Brown, who beat Renzo?

Anthony Perosh : Not at all; he’s from Melbourne and I am from Sydney so we don’t rub shoulders, but here we are friends helping each other, but we are actually from rival schools.

What are your thoughts on the event?

Anthony Perosh : It’s my first international event with black belts and I am glad that I can come and I was very competitive and gave the guys a tough time and at the end of the day if I win I win and if I lose I lose, as long as I give it my best effort. After this will be the Mundials; I have been there twice before, one time as a blue belt and once as a purple belt so I will be there in Brazil, hopefully as brown belt who knows (laughs).

I’ll leave it there Anthony and let you enjoy the rest of the tournament.

Anthony Perosh : Thanks Carl, I would like to thank my sponsors; without their help I would not be here today, Musashi supplements, Howard Gis and also Fivedock squash centre which is the gym I go to.
