Egan Inoue - Interview

Carl Fisher: When did you arrive here?

Egan Inoue : About six thirty this morning. I came via Honolulu to Tokyo, then from Bangkok to Dubai and then came the rest of the way by car, and I’m still waiting for my luggage.

What weight division are you in?

Egan Inoue : 87-98kilos

Who have you been training with Egan?

Egan Inoue : All the guys at Grappling Unlimited in Honolulu. I’ve been working on a lot wrestling with the guys - I’m aiming to do a lot more wrestling this year. Three weeks I fought Guy Metzger at Pride 13 and I lost that one - I didn’t get to use any groundwork on that one.

How do you recover so quick after fighting in such tough matches?

Egan Inoue : I don’t know if I have recovered yet man! The day I got back home I went straight to the gym and resumed my training. June 9th I’m fighting at the Superbrawl - I don’t know my opponent yet, they’re still looking for someone.

There are a lot of good guys in your weight class?

Egan Inoue : There sure is. There are also a few guys who I haven’t heard off, my first opponent being one of them, Zharkhov I think his name is, so I’m a little wary of that one.

What do you like about Abu Dhabi?

Egan Inoue : The competition - when you look at the draw and you see all the names of the best guys in the same group, that’s what I like.

What’s Enson up to these days?

Egan Inoue : He’s just opened up an academy in Kyoto, Japan and he’s teaching and training there. There’s a whole lot of stuff going on there with ju jitsu, wrestling and the Shooto.

How do you stay focused with such a heavy schedule?

Egan Inoue : I just love to train, whether I am competing or not - there’s always one of my guys getting ready for a fight somewhere in the world, so I train with them to get them into shape. My personal training comprises of boxing training an hour a day five times a week, ju jitsu the same, Greco Roman and freestyle wrestling about a half hour of each a day five days a week and about an hour of cardio a day. I have wrestling coaches who help me out as well as the guys at the Academy, and when I get the chance I head out and train with John Lewis and Tito Ortiz.

Your views on the Superfight?

Egan Inoue : I think Kerr may be a little too strong for Sperry - and being that Mark has been training ju jitsu a lot, I am sure he will be able to protect himself from submissions. I know for sure he’ll take Sperry down - it will be a good fight to watch.

What are your goals after Abu Dhabi?

Egan Inoue : I have a Superbrawl on June 9th and maybe another one in September and I may be doing a UFC on June 29th. A while ago I was told I’d be fighting a guy named Elvis, but I think the June 9th Superbrawl may be a little too close and I think they want thirty days - I’ll fight Pride again, I just have to wait for their call.

What’s been your lows this year?

Egan Inoue : Losing at Pride 13 was a major low for me, but there haven’t been many highs for me this year, just seeing my own fighters do good. On a personal level, maybe I will get a high from entering this tournament, who knows?

How do you handle the nerves before a fight?

Egan Inoue : I’ve been competing all my life in one form of competition so I have learned to handle the nerves as best I can; I try not to think about it. Constant competing I think is the answer; the more you enter, the more you get the chance to deal with the emotions.

Any last words Egan?

Egan Inoue : Win or lose whenever I go out to fight I give it 100%, I’m always trying my best.
