Roriston & Suley Mahmoud
Suley
at UZI
Gaz
(on top) at MB4 OK,
here's the premise. Hassle two fighters who are training partners into interviewing
each other. And so it came to pass that MMA veteran Gaz Roriston talks to up-and-coming
star, Shakin' Suley Mahmoud via MSN. Gaz saved the conversation, so SFUK readers
get to eavesdrop on the Gaz and Suley show..... SFUK 23 May 2003
Gaz
Roriston says: 'Up Gaz. Are you busy? Suley
Mahoud says: Nah, sort of . I'm meant to be Gaz.
says: Shall we do the SFUK interview? Suley
says: I'm trying to set up company and stuff Gaz.
says: OK Suley
says: SFUK hasseling you too? Gaz.
says: Yep Suley
says: has SFUK sent questions? Gaz.
says: No Suley
says: haha Gaz.
says: If you want to we can make up the questions? are you there? Tut Suley
says: I am currently away from the computer. Gaz.
says: C'mon "Baaad man" c'mon. Suley
says: nah lets do it sat or next week or something
Gaz. says: tut ohhh. booooo Suley
says: well just delete it Gaz.
says: I won't Suley
says: I'm trying to steal software Gaz.
says: I'll save it to word pad and edit it to make you look bad hahaha Suley
says: probably, ok try and do some. No personal shit Gaz.
says: ok no personal questions. Suley
says: yeah? Gaz.
says: nah I promise I wont. *crosses fingers* . No really I won't Suley
says: Gaz is it true that you used to be muslim but then quit, when faith didnt
allow u to attend beatdowwns , yes I've been speaking to
Usman Gaz.
says: No I have always been interested in religion and I think Islam has some
irrefutable facts but at the same time some of the doctrines don't make any sense
at all to me and I find it hard to believe that they are divine in origin. Suley
says: ooohh nice. Keep that, but not at the start of the interview. Perhaps you
might want to keep some of that as a pretext too the nature of this interview.
Where do u see yourself going with your mma career?
Gaz. says: An early grave, with really achey joints, and no short term memory,
how about you? Suley
says: with what career?
Gaz. says: who're you again? Suley
says: your dad Gaz.
says: Oh why did you leave? Suley
says: all your fault, you see you can't be sensible Gaz.
says: nah this is good Suley
says: interview terminated after one question, haha Gaz.
says: Dont be silly we can edit. Plus people love this shit. I mean its cracking
me up. Suley
says: hah, ok, thats cos your brain is wrong. What do u think of ladies in MMA?
Gaz. says: hmmmmm, the action's boring but theres nothing wrong with athletic
women. They shouldn't be allowed to punch each other in the face though. Suley
says: hmmn, don't you think thats a bad attitude its like how would men like it
if someone tried to dictate our rules of combat, like when councils say "no" to
having events? We are consenting adults (I'm playing devils advocate)
Gaz. says: We are consenting adults but they are women, sorry but I don't believe
in democracy, equality or freedom of speech. Infact the later should be revoked.
Without a right to revolution its impotent. Hey keep it to MMA, politics is boring.
Your last fight was againts Mo Coles. Tell us why did you flagrantly disregard
the rules and elbow him in the head? Suley
says: Ohh man , it truly was an accident - even though I did it couple times Gaz.
says: 3 times in a row accident? Suley
says: it must have just been leverage or distance, it just happened like that
Gaz. says: or
delibrate perhaps? Suley
says: HONEST .hah.
Gaz. says: OK. Suley
says: I'm sportsman not a fighter Gaz.
says: we know, we know (I was only ribbing). Is it true you rarely cook and live
off supplements and bagels? Suley
says: Haha, its a myth. SFUK
butts in this conversation, post interview, to say : No it's not. Suley
says : I fuel the fire though, I go along with it when people joke, but it's not
true. But I do eat a lot of filled bagels and love myoplex Gaz.
says: Do you taylor your diet or do you eat what you want? Suley
says: *sponsor me supplement company* Gaz.
says: (I know the answer but the monkey's dont) Suley
says: I sorted my diet when I was around 19 , I instilled a healthy eating policy
and now healthy eating is the norm. Burgers, and stuff are not on the menu, nor
alcahol. And you Gazatron? Gaz.
says: OK Suley
says: this is turning into the Suley show Gaz.
says: Yes and no. When I have somthing specific that I need to do with my body
such as gain/cut weight, then yes I will taylor my diet to my needs. Also before
a fight in the training that perceeds I try to cut out anything that may make
me sluggish such as red meat, or dairy products which can make you a little mucousy.
Yes and no thats meant to be Suley
says: yeah, true. same Gaz.
says: When gaining weight I try to consume 30gms of protein every three hours,
but I cant be bothered to go into details in an interview. Suley
says: I think everyone knows this stuff the part that nobody likes to admit is
they just don't REALLY implement it Gaz.
says: True Suley
says: Cos its hard to be so strict Gaz.
says: everyone know about nutrition nowadays. I do implemant it but fairly loosley.
Suley says:
And the fact that everyone is different the secret is yoiu have to monitor yourself
in everything u do Gaz.
says: Everyone that knows you knows you are a keen lifter. Which came first chronologicly
lifting or fighting? Suley
says: *thinks back to Gaz laughing at me first time we met, writing my weight
diary* Gaz.
says: hahaha Suley
says: hmmmmn, let me think , well i guess martial arts Gaz.
says: don't think. Feeeeeel. Suley
says: haha Suley
says: I fell into that. Karate - kicboxing and weapons- muay thai, then got stagnent.
Thought thai was the end - fast forward few years- discovered grappling got my
ass kicked. Started lifting properly, I found a real shitty gym at uni Gaz.
says: what year was this? Suley
says: '98 Gaz.
says: OK, Man I'd had a few MMA fights by then. Suley
says: haha. Veteran Gaz.
says: I know and still a young fighter. Crazy go nuts. Suley
says: I met this dude in Gym called Davin. Let me tell u about Davin ... he was
cool. I used to go to this gym, he was there the place only had one bit of floor
that was even and had a bench and squat rack I used to go in for like hour and
half lift and shit - no clue. I used to do a routine I got off a mate - muscle
dynamics Gaz.
says: you shat in his gym?
Suley says: haha. shut it.
Gaz. says: Was that common practise there? Suley
says: nobody would have noticed. Man I got so many stories I could write a page
Gaz. says: Sweet.
Maybe you could do a weekly column?
Suley says: but to cut this one short, I went in one day to find davin training.
He was around 5 ft 9 14 stone and he was pro powerlifter anyway. Gaz.
says: Wow. I bet he had a temper Suley
says: I never squatted until then. Nah he used to be 18 stone
Gaz. says: I bet he was moody though Suley
says: He was a light weight in comparison. Haha, what do you mean? Gaz.
says: Well he's 5'9 so he's going to have little man syndrome. Then on top of
that his parents give him a ridiculous name like Davin so those are two factors
for all the other kids to pick on him no wonder he started lifting. Suley
says: True. Its a bit like making someone really well spoken, and making him a
great fighter, then placing him in a bad area and watch the fun. Gaz.
says: hmmmmm Suley
says: haha- "this is Gaz everyone" *yoda voice* 'he is young but he
will learn'. Anyway here he was in the rack squatting Suley says: 260kg. I was
like holy shit, then I was like teach me teach me. Help me, what do i do? Gaz.
says: Man, 260kg is alot Suley
says: he was reluctant Suley says: but I got him to help me with routine and my
weights rocketed and my thirst for knowledge. Gaz.
says: So Davin taught you how to lift. Suley
says: he taught me to research what to do Gaz.
says: So we could say he imparted you with the knowledge and the bug, thats changed
your life. Suley
says: about basic food stuff & about weights, yeah, put me on right path Gaz.
says: true but I think you'd have found it any way if a persons so inclined its
just a matter of time before they get there. Suley
says: Or I'd still be doing cable crossovers and leg extensions
Gaz. says: haha@leg extensions. leg extensions=romo Suley
says: haha sorry for all readers who do them. haha. So Gaz how did you feel Cage
Combat series went? I thought few were great one lacked a little but mostly really
good. Did you like your show? Gaz.
says: Yeah they were good. I didn't watch the girl one and I still havn't seen
Jez's (Bailey's) which I really want to see because I like that guy he cracks
me up. Suley
says: I missed that, we were in Miami weren't we? Gaz.
says: Yep we were in Florida at the time Suley
says: muwhaha Gaz.
says: you were there too Suley
says: So I was. The 72 hours binge. haha Gaz.
says: mmmmmmmmm Suley
says: not alcahol, but me and you lacked sleep .It was the damn jacuzzi Gaz.
says: I'm pretty anyway. I don't need that much beauty sleep. Suley
says: And Philip Miller and Joe Stevenson = bad influence. lol name dropping Gaz.
says: Joe Stephenson is the coolest guy in the U.S.A. That kid is hilarious. Back
to the question...yeah my programme was alright. Suley
says: do you have time for the ladies yet HAHAH Gaz.
says: I wish. (I don't even know where they go, or what they do, or where you
find them?) Suley
says: haha, I thought they all were great Gaz.
says: yeah Ross owned Suley
says: obviously lot of mates were in them so I'm kind bias Gaz.
says: same as Suley
says: I thought ****** vs ****** Suley says: was lacking something Gaz.
says: I thought ****** was a pussy. What the crap did they film him for? Suley
says: not sure if we should name names Suley
says: haha. Too late Gaz.
says: theres always the final edit Suley
says: hehe true. ****** give up Gaz.
says: ****** ahhhh my nail
Suley says: you have no balls and no clue what your doing. Your gonna get mashed
Gaz. says: mate
we have to keep that in but ***** over the name hahaha. How long have you been
training in London Suley? Suley
says: brb. dumpola Gaz.
says: OK. Convenient I need to piss one out.
Suley says: About 3 years, graduated in 99 , came here in 2000. Started understanding
what real training is and here we are. Gaz.
says: Ok. You told me you stopped being intersested in your girlfriend of four
years while you were training in London and this lead to your break up and you
said that you didn't really care. Does this make you a bad person and are you
this discompassionate towards everyone. In short are you a baaad man? Suley
says: oh man. cheers mate. There was lot of background. We were both young . It
happens. I dont regret it . I'll always wonder what if. Gaz.
says: Do you regret anything? Suley
says: I wish I started training younger, but regreting is just another word for
learning. Every regret you have you can learn. I guess learnt something from it
i.e regret I didnt KO/ sub that guy . Why did it happen? Work on you mistakes
and you grow as a fighter. I used to think I'll wait until im perfect before I
fight, but you realise that you wait forever cos it's not going to happen. So
just learn on the job - fighting as a YTS scheme Gaz.
says: Thats a pretty good way of putting it. Ok so you regret stuff that hasn't
benifitted you or satiated a want. Have you ever regretted your actions toward
another person based on viewing the situation from they're perspective. I ask
again are you a baaad man? Suley
says: haha, err when I was younger, I beat some kids up that didnt deserve it.
I'm not religious but i try to be a GOOD man, I try and stick by Karma rules Gaz.
says: I see. So you only regret it because the possibility of karmic return. (hmmm
I still think you're a triple A baaad man.) Suley
says: So I expect a kicking coming my way sooner or later. Gaz.
says: are you a sociopath?
Suley says: haha. No thats you and Mike Green. So back to you Gaz.
says: Ok!... (My favorite subject aside from your amorality)
Suley says: You're rematching Paul Jenkins soon, what is your training for that?
and any changes from last time?
Gaz. says: Same as before just pummel in the clinch and not go to my back. Suley
says: I see. Then your rematching Mark
Day at EF.1 Anything you want to tell us about that? Gaz.
says: First things first. I'm trying not to think about Mark because first I have
to deal with Paul so I'm focused on that right now. Last time I didn't pummel
at all. I was seriously not expecting him to want to close. Paul is a primarily
a stand up fighter so I thought he would be happy to trade. In the programme (TV)
I said I had better hands then him, I meant to say sharper but those were the
words that came out in interview. I thought (and showed in my opinion) that I
could sting and move against him and pick him apart on the feet. This time I wont
go to my back and my standup wrestling will be in gear. Suley
says: vengenace is a dangerous motive *said in best little thai man from kickboxer
voice* Gaz.
says: Yeah, Mark Day he's another tough headed sod. Last time was a draw I heard
mixed opinions on that fight with regards to where a decision would have gone.
From being in the fight a draw seemed fair it was very back and forth with both
of us landing some great shots from within each others guard and transitioning,
sweeping and submission hunting. I would love to see the tape (c' mon Mr Jardine
get that one out there). Both of us have matured since then so expect the same
intensity but on a higher plateu. Suley
says: yeah. Never be said your fights are boring Gaz.
says: Never! Suley
says: you have some beasts. Jenkins, Cooper (who is awesome), Day. All wars Gaz.
says: Sometimes I think perhaps I have a style that makes wars, perhaps I should
tweek and look for some earlier finishes Suley
says: before you lose your good looks Gaz.
says: Even in the fights I've lost I somtimes wonder how? Everything seemed to
be there ie: I land the first shot get dominant position first then somthing happens
like the intensity is there but the finish isn't. I'm telling everyone once I
get my head round it people are getting blitzed. Suley
says: yeah. I can see where your coming from Gaz.
says: Pisses me off actually *shakes fist at the sky* "WHY GOD? WHY?* Suley
says: LOL Gaz.
says: You yourself have been making a few ripples to put it mildly in UK MMA,
with many of the top promotions head hunting you. To Illustrate this you are fighting
on arguably the daddy of UK MMA events - Andy Jardine's Extreme
Brawl 3 for a national tittle. How do feel about 1- Your opponant Matt Ewin
and. 2- The prospect of being Brittish Champ in the longest running domestic show?
Suley says:
wow big question. Its really cool I have got the shot and I'm grateful to Andy
Jardine for the opportunity. I have a bit more time freed up now than expected
so I aim to put it to good use training wise. Matt Ewin I think is probably underated
and i think this is going to be real tough for me, but for him as well. Styles
make fights and i htink this may be a bit of a Gaz style fight. We're both going
home with headaches Gaz.
says: Bloody hell do your cardio then if its gonna be Gaz style. Underated because
of how The Reidinator made him look? Suley
says: yeah. I think nerves had an impact on him. But I think he came back real
strong to beat a great fighter in Alex Evans Gaz.
says: true a lot of people come back better after a loss, look at Freeman, I think
that guys so dangerous after a loss. Velentine's in for some ride at Extreme Force.
