The Art of Boxing Review by Steven Murgatroyd

The Art of Boxing

Having read many of Jim Burns’ interesting articles in the martial arts press, I was eagerly awaiting further insights into the acclaimed boxers’ way of thinking about the noble art. The articles were thought provoking and addressed the psychological side of entering the ring.

"The Art of Boxing", I thought, would be more of the same, a book that would go beyond the normal "how to" format and look deeper into what could be called the ‘mental’ side of the sport. Maybe I have read too many Geoff Thompson books and expect too much from a book that at first glance it looked a bit disappointing. Pictures of jabs, crosses, hooks etc were all on show as in many other boxing books. However, not one to, well, judge a book by its cover I read through.

I was quite pleased with what I saw. The book is easily read and does cover some good points on the basics that are sometimes easily forgot as we strive for more and more knowledge. The book will help the beginner understand the mechanics of each punch and goes on to include, amongst others, chapters on footwork, fitness & counter attacks.

It is only when you reach the last chapter of the book that, for me, it starts to get going. Why boxing? touches on Jim’s knowledge of the sport and moves past the punches. He brushes over fear, ring confidence and what comes to those who push themselves further than the norm. this is the direction I wanted the book to go in from the beginning.

For someone getting in to boxing for the first time it is a good read, for those who have been training for a while, you will already have covered most of this in your gym but it is worth reading just to go over the basics. There are some good points to be picked up throughout the book and it will benefit anyone who should / has to include stand up fighting in their MMA game (this basically means everyone!).
