Good:
Probably the best weight training book ever.
Bad:
Real f'ugly cover
Verdict:
Buy it, and some brown paper for the cover.
What
the f*** is that? Said the mother-in-law when she clocked what possibly is the
ugliest cover this side of David Mellor's autobiography. The cover looks like
it's been soundly thrashed with the ugly stick. Here's some good advice, if you
plan on reading this on a train, wrap it up in brown paper. It's that bad.
Luckily
the contents are pure Cameron Diaz. Long and lean. It's vital statistics being
3 sections,22 chapters
and 470 pages.
Stuart
McRobert is a writer for various bodybuiding magazines. His articles are usually
radically different to the rubbish printed in those steroid comics. He also publishes
the excellent bi-monthly magazine, Hardgainer,
aimed at genetically average, drug free trainers. McRobert was your typical skinny
arse, struggling for years to gain weight despite working till he dropped on conventional
bodybuilding routines. He discovered that drug free trainers have to train radically
different to the steroid inflated clowns that appear in muscle mags. Practising
what he preached he managed to achieve feats such as a 400lb x 20 stiff legged
deadlift ! Awesome.
McRobert
continues where he left off with the seminal Brawn. Seven
years on, after suffering some serious injuries (mostly due to genetic problems),
McRobert is older and wiser. He shows you how to get big, drug free, safely.
Again,
virtually no photos, the book is absolutely crammed with information for drug
free strength and weight gain. If you are a beginner it's the perfect place to
start, if you're an experienced trainer it may make you rethink your approach
to weight training.
What
results can you expect? Beyond Brawn has charts and formula's to measure your
potential. The good news is, it's probably better than you think. Once you've
worked out your potential, how do you achieve it?
The
pillar of McRobert's training philosophy is progression. He's not H.I.T., he's
not Dinosaur Training, he's not Super Slow, although he straddles all these other
training modalities. The emphasis is always to lift more in three months time
than you are doing now. Beyond Brawn guides you to achieve this. Step by step:
How to design your own routines, perform your lifts safely and avoid that Mick
Hucknall of weight lifting - overtraining.
Part
of the book is an autobiographical account of a crippling injury suffered by the
author and how, after a long struggle he got over it. Anyone who has back or knee
trouble will find this part enlightening. There's a thumbs up for chiropractic
and Trigger point therapy in particular.
So
there you have it. A definitive account how to get bigger and stronger drug free.
David
Mellor with Cameron Diaz's body. Put a bag over it's head and go for it.
